Porting from Verizon

I completed registration on line given the issues with customer service raised by others. I have not activated my LG900G since I understand when the port process is complete I will know it. Some folks have said a matter of minutes. Others appear to hang for weeks or longer waiting for something to happen. How will I know it and how long will it take? Is there some way I can follow the process to know what is happening? Do I have to activate my phone now, or will the process of porting do that for me? Will net10 inform me if I need to do anything else? Thanks for any assistance.
