Moving from pre-paid to monthly

I currently have a Samsung prepaid phone that I use through Net10. I recently purchased a Galaxy S3 from a friend and I have checked it's serial number on the website and it is compatible with Net10. My question is, how do I go about making this switch? Do I need to purchase a sim card for the Galaxy? How would I get the number transferred over? What are the steps for this process?
