More minutes???

More minutes???

My screen on my phone broke and I can't read it. I called to transfer my number to a phone that works and was told because I can't see my minutes in order to transfer my number I have to go and buy another card. I have time on my phone and because I can't read how many I have I have to go and buy more just to transfer my number? It makes no sense. why should I lose the minutes that I already have on my old phone, just because I can't see the screen?
